Mary and subjects in front of clinic on Seattle sidewalk. 2002.
"I think Mary caught me really good," says Thomas, pictured in back row at left, who once lived in a bread truck parked on the city's waterfront. "She got the expression and everything. I have a big smile, even though I don't have my teeth." The background of Thomas’ portrait is an image of a bag of Wonder Bread.
By day, Larson works as a nurse at Harborview Medical Center's Pioneer Square Clinic on Third Avenue. She cares for the poor and the homeless. By night, she paints their portraits.
A Seattle native, I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Nursing from Carroll College in Helena, Montana in 1995. After establishing a nursing career working with the homeless, I began painting in 1999.
